Free Bibles by Post in the UK
If you would like to read the Bible but cannot afford to buy one, we would be pleased to send you a free physical Bible by post in the UK, subject to availability.
We currently offer three Bible versions:
- King James Version (KJV), also known as the Authorised Version
- New King James Version (NKJV)
- English Standard Version (ESV)
There is no charge for the Bible or for postage. We send Bibles to UK postal addresses, including requests from individuals and organisations such as schools, hospitals, nursing homes and prisons.
Many people have access to the Bible through websites, mobile phones and Bible apps. There is also something valuable about having a physical printed Bible that you can hold, read, mark and return to whenever you wish.
See below for more information on the various versions we provide.

Which free Bible versions are available?
We offer three well-known English Bible translations. Each has its own history and style:
King James Version
The King James Version (KJV) is one of the best-known English translations of the Bible. It is also commonly called the King James Bible, or Authorised Version (AV).
First published in 1611, the King James Version has had an enormous influence on the English language and on English-speaking Christianity. Its distinctive style and traditional vocabulary have made it a much-loved Bible for generations.
Many common expressions still used today were first coined or popularised by the King James Version:
- Skin of my teeth (Job 19:20 KJV)
- At their wit’s end (Psalm 107:27 KJV)
- A drop in the bucket (Isaiah 40:15 KJV)
- The apple of his eye (Deuteronomy 32:10 KJV)
- Sign of the times (Matthew 16:3 KJV)
- Root of the matter (Job 19:28 KJV)
- A wolf in sheep’s clothing (Matthew 7:15 KJV)
- The powers that be (Romans 13:1 KJV)
The KJV uses traditional English expressions which may be unfamiliar to modern readers. For some people, this traditional language is an important part of its appeal. Others appreciate its literary qualities and its long history within English-speaking Christianity.
However, to ensure you understand this version correctly, you may often need to ask a search engine “what did this mean in the 1600s”. Or you may prefer the New King James version, which we also offer.
To request a free King James Version Bible by post or a free Authorised Version Bible, email purereligion@proton.me with your request and UK postal address, and tell us that you prefer the KJV.
New King James Version
The New King James Version (NKJV) was produced as a modern-language revision of the King James tradition. It seeks to retain many of the characteristics and literary qualities associated with the KJV while using language that is generally easier for contemporary readers to understand.
- The NKJV is an updated version of the famous and highly regarded King James Version.
- Archaic words used in the KJV such as Anon, Trow, Wotteth, and Forsooth are replaced in the NKJV with more widely understood words such as Quickly, Think, Know, and Indeed.
- The KJV is renounced for its rich and poetic use of the English language – the NKJV strives to maintain this.
- The KJV was widely regarded in its time as the most accurate and well-researched version of its day. The NKJV seeks to build on this foundation with 130 scholars involved in its production.
- These scholars used recent research in archaeology, linguistics, and textual studies to further improve an already great translation; while remaining faithful to the original Greek, Hebrew, and Aramaic texts, according to Bible Gateway.
If you are searching for a free New King James Version Bible by post, you can request an NKJV from us, and we will gladly post this to any UK address, assuming we have stock available.
The NKJV can be a useful choice for someone who appreciates the traditional character of the King James Bible but would prefer more familiar modern English.
To request a free New King James Version Bible, email purereligion@proton.me with your request and UK postal address, and tell us that you would prefer the NKJV.
English Standard Version
The English Standard Version (ESV) is a modern English Bible translation that aims to provide a relatively literal rendering of the biblical texts while remaining readable for contemporary English speakers.
The ESV was published in 2001 and is widely used by Christians, churches, Bible teachers and students. It is based on the Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek biblical texts and was produced by a team of over 100 scholars and editors.
According to the Crossway team involved in the translation of this Bible version:
- The ESV is an ‘essentially literal’ translation that seeks, as far as possible, to reproduce the precise wording of the original text and the personal style of each Bible writer.
- The translation was motivated by a belief that Scripture is sacred and that the words of the Bible are the very words of God.
- It is based on well-attested Hebrew and Greek manuscripts.
If you are looking for a free English Standard Version Bible by post, please contact us by email, and we will gladly post it to any UK address, subject to stock availability.
The ESV may be particularly suitable if you would like a modern English Bible while retaining a fairly literal translation approach.
To request a free ESV Bible, email purereligion@proton.me with your request and UK postal address, and tell us that you prefer the ESV.
KJV, NKJV or ESV: which Bible should you choose?
The choice of English Bible versions can feel overwhelming, so here’s a quick summary of the ones we send by post:
- The KJV, or King James Version, uses traditional English and has a long history of use within Christianity.
- The NKJV, or New King James Version, retains much of the traditional character of the KJV while using more contemporary English.
- The ESV, or English Standard Version, uses modern English and follows a relatively literal translation philosophy.
If you are unsure which version to request, tell us in your email, and we can help where possible.
For someone who enjoys traditional language, the KJV may be an appealing choice. Someone who wants a more familiar version of the King James tradition may prefer the NKJV. Someone looking for a modern English translation may prefer the ESV.
The most important thing is to begin reading God’s Word.
Who can request a free Bible?
We welcome requests from individuals who would like to have a Bible for personal reading and study.
We can also consider requests from organisations and institutions where there is a genuine need for Bibles. This may include:
- Schools
- Hospitals
- Nursing and residential homes
- Prisons
- Chaplaincies
- Christian ministries
- Individuals and families
If you are requesting Bibles on behalf of an organisation, please explain this in your email and let us know approximately how many copies you are looking for.
Our supplies are limited, so we may not always be able to fulfil larger requests. Every reasonable request will be considered.
What quality and size are the free Bibles?
The Bibles we distribute FOC are paperback outreach Bibles or economy Bibles. They typically have small or medium-sized print. We usually have a small number of large-print Bibles available on request, but by default we supply medium/standard size Bibles.
Outreach Bibles generally come with a reading plan for new Bible students and an overview of the main themes of the Bible message, including the Gospel of salvation.
Large hardback Bibles are very expensive, and to maximise the number of Bibles we can distribute, we do not stock or supply these, as they would rapidly deplete our limited funds.
Why do we give away free Bibles?
The Bible is at the heart of the Christian faith. It tells the story of God’s dealings with humanity, the history of Israel, the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, and the message of salvation through faith in Him.
Jesus said:
“It is more blessed to give than to receive.” – Acts 20:35 KJV
The apostle Paul also described his preaching as being offered “free of charge” so that others could hear the gospel.
“What then is my reward? That when I preach the gospel, I may present the gospel of Christ without charge.” – 1 Corinthians 9:18, ESV
We believe that financial circumstances should not prevent anyone from accessing a Bible.
A person may be curious about Christianity, searching for answers, returning to faith after many years, or simply wanting to read the Bible for themselves. Whatever the reason, we are glad to help where we can.
